5 Ways to Enjoy Hill Country Beauty in Georgetown

Take in a long breath of clean air, enjoy the feeling of peace you can only get when you can’t hear any sounds of traffic, and lose yourself on a scenic trail. We all need a little bit of the outdoors in our lives, and Georgetown is just the place to escape to nature. Located a short drive north of Austin, Georgetown is surrounded by the beauty of the Texas Hill Country, right down to its sloping hills, groves of oak and pecan trees, and immaculate river. Not sure where to get started? Check out these amazing experiences, then plan your next road trip to Georgetown.

garey-park-georgetown-texasGet Away from it All in Garey Park

Whether you’re looking to get lost for the day or for a scenic place to delight in a picnic, you’ll find plenty to like about Garey Park. Start by traversing the park’s seven miles of hiking trails that take you through grassy fields past prickly pear cactuses and wildflowers to the bank of the South San Gabriel River. One such pathway follows the river through a heavily wooded area that attracts an array of birds during the spring and fall migration seasons. Make sure to stop by the wildlife viewing blind, a refuge that affords a great opportunity to see some of animals that call the park home.

When you reach the river, dip your toes into the water to cool off or spend the afternoon fishing for bass and sunfish. There are two stocked ponds in the park that you can cast your line into as well. If you’re here with your best furry friend, let them run freely at the park’s 4.5-acre off-leash dog ranch. Covering 525 acres (making it larger than Austin’s Zilker Park), Garey Park is just the place to go when you want to feel like you’re miles away from it all. Yet the park is less than 10 miles away from Downtown Georgetown, making spending a day here as easy as can be.

picnic-san-gabriel-park-georgetown-texasRelax by the San Gabriel River

Roll out a blanket under the shade of a 200-year-old oak tree and dine al fresco as you watch the pristine water of the San Gabriel River trickle on by. Not only is this one of the best ways to relish an afternoon in San Gabriel Park, it’s a must while you’re in Georgetown. The park, placed where the north and south forks of the river converge, showcases some of the town’s finest scenery. Although you could spend the entire day lounging by the river, there’s more to do here.

Try your luck at hooking a fish from the riverbank or explore the 1.6-mile San Gabriel Park Loop, which connects to other pathways like the 5.5-mile Randy Morrow Trail that serve as a easily accessible route to Georgetown’s other top spots. Back in the San Gabriel Park, take on the nine-hole disc golf course set among inviting oaks before returning to your spot next to the river. After all that fun you’ve had in San Gabriel Park, you deserve a bit more rest and relaxation. Where better than in one of Texas’ most beautiful parks?

dog and wine glass in georgetownEnjoy a Day in Downtown Georgetown

Downtown areas aren’t typically known for their natural appeal, and for good reason. Yet Downtown Georgetown isn’t like other downtown areas, as it’s home to the Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas. Full of breathtaking architecture, including the magnificent Williamson County Courthouse, the square is a bustling hub full of one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants. Get a glass of wine from one of the square’s three wineries and find a spot on the lawn to take it all in. If your appetite has kicked in, get takeout from local eateries like Burger University or Roots and have a picnic, or simply stroll around the square with your wine in hand. With places like The Escape Fine Crafts & Gifts, the Georgetown Antique Mall, and Mikey V’s Hot Sauce Shop, you’ll also find some truly first-class window shopping as well.

camping at tejas park at lake georgetownSleep Under the Stars

Looking to get away from it all? Pitch a tent at Tejas Park, a secluded space settled near the bank of the North San Gabriel River. The park is home to only 12 primitive campsites, meaning you’ll feel as if you’ve put down roots for the night in the wilderness of the Texas Hill Country. Once the sun rises, stroll down the hiking trail that takes you to the river, where you can go for a splash or try your luck at hooking a fish. For a more intense adventure, pick up the trail that takes you to Lake Georgetown, a roughly three-mile journey through dense thickets of juniper trees. End the day back at your campsite, where you’ll feel like you’re all on your own.

berry springs park in georgetownDiscover One of Georgetown’s Hidden Gems

Groves of pecan trees. Fields of wildflowers. The crystal-clear waters of spring-fed pools. Located within five miles of Downtown Georgetown, it’s no wonder Berry Springs Park and Preserve is considered a hidden gem. This 300-acre getaway to nature is a fantastic destination for bird and wildlife watchers. Head to the bird viewing area to watch these friendly flyers flitting from one branch to another, then continue on the 2.5 miles of hiking and biking trails to see even more of the park’s colorful residents. The park is based around two springs that you can see on the Spring Deck, and you can even cast a line from the fishing platform. As you meander between oak and pecan trees and through grassy fields, stop by the historic compound to greet the park’s donkeys.

Want to stay longer? Reserve one of the sites in the primitive or improved camping areas. Wake up the next morning for another full day of adventure.

We could all use some time outdoors. Get away to the beauty of the Texas Hill Country on your next road trip to Georgetown. Plan your visit here.

Why Georgetown?

3 Reasons Why Georgetown, Texas is a Top Meetings Destination

Finding the perfect destination for any event is a true balancing act. On the one hand, you want to host it in a first-class venue surrounded by one-of-a-kind experiences. Yet you don’t want to inconvenience your attendees with long travel times or all the big-city traffic. Georgetown, Texas offers the best of both worlds, all while retaining our own identity. Besides our convenient location just north of Austin, our world-class conference center and abundance of unique activities makes us the perfect choice for conventions, corporate meetings, trade shows and more.

Get to know what we have to offer below, then contact us to start planning your next event here.

Our World-Class Conference Center

Settled among verdant oak and mesquite trees near the trickling San Gabriel River, the Sheraton Austin Georgetown Hotel & Conference Center is more than a hotel. It’s a destination. Ideal for functions of all sizes, the hotel has more than 26,600 square feet of event space and 18 meeting rooms, the largest of which can accommodate as many as 1,500 attendees. All meeting rooms are equipped with comprehensive technology, and you’ll have the assistance of on-site experts and meeting planners that will help everything run smoothly. See floor plans, a capacity chart and room set-up examples here.

Beyond its meeting facilities, the Sheraton is a place where your attendees will feel at ease. More than 220 stylish guestrooms and suites include plush king or queen beds with fluffy pillows, dedicated work desks and rainfall showerheads in the bathrooms. The hotel’s inviting restaurant and lobby bar afford space to dine and socialize outside of your event hours, while the outdoor heated pool offers a convenient way to unwind year-round. When your attendees need to work up a sweat, they can either visit the 24-hour fitness center or jog or borrow a bike and explore the nearby North San Gabriel River Trail.

The Sheraton’s world-class service, amenities and convenient location just off Interstate 35 near Downtown Georgetown means it has everything you need to host the kind of event your guests will rave about.

The Best of the Hill Country is Just Minutes Away

Breathtaking underground caverns, wineries serving delicious Texas reds and whites and all the breathtaking architecture of the Most Beautiful Square in Texas. Host your event in Georgetown and your attendees won’t have to go far to experience some of the best the Hill Country has to offer.

Located just a few minutes away from the Sheraton hotel, Downtown Georgetown is centered around the Courthouse on the Square, a historic structure that doubles as a unique meeting venue. Surrounding it are countless restaurants, shops and three wineries, where your guests can fill their glass and stroll the area as they sip their new favorite wine. The arts are abundant here as well, with the works of nationally renowned artists on display at the Georgetown Art Center and live theater productions at the Palace Theatre.

While Downtown Georgetown is a treasure trove of things to do, see and taste, there’s much more going around town. Situated just a few minutes south of Georgetown, Inner Space Cavern is a subterranean wonderland full of breathtaking formations that allows group tours. For an off-site ice breaker with locally brewed craft beer, rent out Rentsch Brewery. Yard games, TVs and an enticing selection of brews await at the brewery, which can accommodate up to 220 if you book the entire indoor/outdoor facility.

To give your guests an authentic Texas experience, host a team-building activity at Reunion Ranch, which provides a range of fun activities that’ll bring everyone together. There are also the elevated obstacles at the Challenge Course, where individual and group activities are designed to develop teamwork skills while having a great time along the way. Finally, a venture out to the Walburg German Restaurant & Biergarten is another great option if you want to give your attendees a taste of the Hill Country’s German heritage.

For more suggested activities, contact our team and we will be happy to assist.

It’s Easy to Get Here

Walk Georgetown’s downtown streets or explore its cave and you’ll feel like you’re a world away from all of Austin’s hustle and bustle. Yet this Hill Country getaway is just 30 miles north of downtown Austin. As close as it is to the Texas capital, your attendees won’t have to stress about navigating all that big-city traffic. If they’re flying into the Austin Bergstrom International Airport or driving up from San Antonio, they can cruise up Toll 130, a route that goes around downtown Austin. Not only that, but Georgetown is less than three hours from the Dallas and Fort Worth area and Houston.

Whether your attendees are arriving by air or by car, they’ll find getting to Georgetown as easy as saying “Howdy, y’all.”

Our world-class conference center, convenient location and wealth of things to see and do makes Georgetown an ideal destination for your next event. Start your planning process by seeing all our venues and service providers, then submit your RFP.

And the Most Beautiful Town Square in the state? This I had to see….We arrived in Georgetown late on a Friday afternoon, and swung by the Visitor’s Center. Talk about a welcome. This little town has a stunning historical façade, and they weren’t kidding about that town square. It REALLY is beautiful. It’s a reminder of all things that used to be easy, and good. Where soda shops were a real thing, and not just in the movies. Where neighbors were actually neighborly. It oozes nostalgia.” Susan is from a small town and this now an avid world traveler. Georgetown TX Featured in Southern Living Magazine

Georgetown, Texas was chosen as one of Southern Living’s 15 Affordable Towns We Love.   What a great article by Author Perri O. Blumberg: “Georgetown is gearing up to be running on 100% wind and solar power by 2018 —a huge draw for affordable and eco-friendly living. Don’t miss the annual Red Poppy Festival, a free celebration with live music, a parade, a kid zone, a car show, arts and crafts, and more. Hailed as “The Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas,” downtown Georgetown allows free parking after 5 p.m. year-round so you can dine, try a wine-tasting or two, and take in a theatrical performance without feeding any meters. No trip to Georgetown is complete without a visit to the Blue Hole, a lagoon along the San Gabriel River, and a tour of the Georgetown Art Center, where admission is free.”  You can read the entire article here: southernliving.com/travel…

Family Friendly Trip Ideas

When in need of a family-friendly getaway for the weekend or a few days, Georgetown is the perfect place to keep the kiddos (along with the adults) entertained with plenty of affordable and fun options to choose from.

Blue Hole – Located five blocks north of the downtown Square along N. Austin Avenue, limestone bluffs border this scenic lagoon and popular swimming hole along the South Fork of the San Gabriel River. The entrance to Blue Hole Park is at W. Second and Rock Streets. The park features picnic areas, restrooms and wading areas.

Inner Space Cavern – In 1963, the Texas Highway Department’s core drilling team discovered over 7,000 square feet of cave while taking six-inch core samples to determine if the ground was stable enough to support a large highway overpass. As they were drilling one of the test holes, the bit suddenly dropped 26 feet, and the highway crew knew there was something down there besides rock. Inner Space cavern opened to the public in the summer of 1966 and has welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors to its beautiful site since that time.

Lake Georgetown – This recreational spot offers a number of attractions from camping, boating and fishing to biking, hiking and horseback riding trails as well as swimming and picnic areas. Lake Georgetown has several group shelters at Russell Park, which may be rented for family reunions. There is also a large pavilion located in the Nature Center area, which may be rented from Georgetown Parks and Recreation. The park gates at Lake Georgetown open at 6 a.m. and close at 10 p.m.

Splash Pads – To cool off in the hot summer months, Georgetown has several splash pads locations for families to enjoy. One is located in San Jose Park and another in the downtown area, outside the Georgetown Art Center. All splash pads are free and open throughout the summer.

Palace Theater – The Palace Theatre in the historic downtown district is home to a year-round season of live theater productions including musicals, comedies, and dramas. This former movie house was renovated and in 2001 opened as a live theater venue. View upcoming shows at: http://www.georgetownpalace.com/calendar.php.

The Williamson Museum – Located in the town square, The Williamson Museum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and proceeds benefit the museum’s educational programing. The Museum offers free and exciting hands-on educational programs to the public through innovative exhibits, tours and outreach.

Georgetown Art Center & Sculpture Tour – Visitors can immerse themselves in art at the Georgetown Art Center (open Tuesday-Saturday 10-6 and Sunday 1-5). Situated just a block off the Courthouse Square in the Historic Firehouse No. 1 (circa 1892), the new Georgetown Art Center, managed by the local nonprofit organization Georgetown Art Works, offers the community a place to appreciate art at every level.
