Family Friendly Trip Ideas

When in need of a family-friendly getaway for the weekend or a few days, Georgetown is the perfect place to keep the kiddos (along with the adults) entertained with plenty of affordable and fun options to choose from.

Blue Hole – Located five blocks north of the downtown Square along N. Austin Avenue, limestone bluffs border this scenic lagoon and popular swimming hole along the South Fork of the San Gabriel River. The entrance to Blue Hole Park is at W. Second and Rock Streets. The park features picnic areas, restrooms and wading areas.

Inner Space Cavern – In 1963, the Texas Highway Department’s core drilling team discovered over 7,000 square feet of cave while taking six-inch core samples to determine if the ground was stable enough to support a large highway overpass. As they were drilling one of the test holes, the bit suddenly dropped 26 feet, and the highway crew knew there was something down there besides rock. Inner Space cavern opened to the public in the summer of 1966 and has welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors to its beautiful site since that time.

Lake Georgetown – This recreational spot offers a number of attractions from camping, boating and fishing to biking, hiking and horseback riding trails as well as swimming and picnic areas. Lake Georgetown has several group shelters at Russell Park, which may be rented for family reunions. There is also a large pavilion located in the Nature Center area, which may be rented from Georgetown Parks and Recreation. The park gates at Lake Georgetown open at 6 a.m. and close at 10 p.m.

Splash Pads – To cool off in the hot summer months, Georgetown has several splash pads locations for families to enjoy. One is located in San Jose Park and another in the downtown area, outside the Georgetown Art Center. All splash pads are free and open throughout the summer.

Palace Theater – The Palace Theatre in the historic downtown district is home to a year-round season of live theater productions including musicals, comedies, and dramas. The Williamson Museum – Located in the town square, The Williamson Museum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and proceeds benefit the museum’s educational programing. The Museum offers free and exciting hands-on educational programs to the public through innovative exhibits, tours and outreach.

Georgetown Art Center & Sculpture Tour – Visitors can immerse themselves in art at the Georgetown Art Center (open Tuesday-Saturday 10-6 and Sunday 1-5). Situated just a block off the Courthouse Square in the Historic Firehouse No. 1 (circa 1892), the new Georgetown Art Center, managed by the local nonprofit organization Georgetown Art Works, offers the community a place to appreciate art at every level.

San Gabriel Park & Hike and Bike Trails – The Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department has nearly 9 miles of hike and bike trails along the North and South San Gabriel Rivers. There is a 1.6-mile granite trail that loops around San Gabriel Park. On the North San Gabriel River, there is a one-mile lighted concrete trail that goes from San Gabriel Park to Rivery Park. On the South San Gabriel River, there is a one mile lighted concrete trail that starts at Walden and College and goes to Blue Hole Park. The City of Georgetown’s San Gabriel River Trail was designated.

Georgetown Challenge Course – Located off the San Gabriel River, the Georgetown Challenge Course is a series of ropes challenges aimed toward individuals and groups that acts as an approach to team-building for individuals, businesses and nonprofits. Facilitators engage participants to explore and practice teamwork. Courses range from four to six hours and prices vary.
