Annual Haunted Hayride and Carnival, October 29

Come out to the Georgetown Community Center for a night of fun and fright at our 15th Annual Haunted Hayride & Carnival on Thursday, October 29!

This year’s event will be held at the Georgetown Community Center from 6-9 pm. Get ready to be frightened on the hayride which runs through San Gabriel Park with scary scenes put on by local organizations. Ticket prices are $3 for ages 13 & up, and $2 for ages 5-12. Children under 5 are free! Tickets sales stop at 8:30 pm, so get there early.

Join us inside the Community Center for a Carnival with food, drinks, games and prizes! It is free to enter the Carnival, but each booth will charge a small fee to participate.

Brett Family Entertainment Group, Saturday, October 24

Come to the Klett Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, October 24 at 7 p.m. for cutting edge family entertainment!   The Brett Family Show is a crisp and polished two-hour production featuring incredible musical variety for all ages. The show integrates covers from all genres, all eras, and all artists, as well as some first-class original music that is winning fans all over the world. Each member of The Brett Family is dynamic enough to carry his or her own solo show, but when they come together onstage, the harmony and power of the group creates a totally unique and captivating experience.

The Brett Family started their Branson career on The Showboat Branson Belle as contracted artists. Now, they own and operate their own show, which allows them the creativity and innovation necessary to take their mission of producing cutting edge family entertainment into the future. They currently perform around 140 shows at Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Theater in Branson, Missouri, and about 50 shows in locations all around the world every year.

During the month of October, the arts take center stage in Georgetown. Happy Trails Art Banners, October 1 – November 15

The “Happy Trails” art banner project recalls the name of the famous Roy Rogers song as well as Georgetown’s location on the historic Chisholm Trail. Look for 65 art banners in the historic downtown featuring original artwork by 55 artists. The project is supported by a grant from the Georgetown Arts and Culture Board and Georgetown Art Works, a local arts nonprofit. Vote on your favorite banners by filling out a ballot at the Georgetown Public Library, Williamson Museum, or the Visitor Information Center.

An art festival featuring 150 contemporary and fine artists, transforming the historic Georgetown Square into an outdoor art gallery. City-Wide Garage and Sidewalk Sale, October 31

It’s the ultimate recycling and bargain-hunting event! The City-Wide Garage and Sidewalk Sale will be held downtown on Saturday, October 31. Don’t miss this opportunity to shop or sell gently-used items at this new event sponsored by the Downtown Georgetown Association.  Downtown stores will hold sidewalk sales offering discounted items.  The garage sale portion will take place in downtown parking lots. Sale hours are from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The sale will be an excellent fundraising opportunity for churches, civic organizations, and other nonprofits. Friday Night Music on the Square, October 23

This Friday, come out to the Downtown Square to hear Accoustalyn! Acoustalyn is an acoustic ensemble based in and playing often in and around the Central Texas area, where they have played a number of State Park Summer series concerts as well as several large festivals. They have released their first album and will begin recording their second one next Spring. Their line-up includes one guitarist, one violinist, and two female vocalists. Pink Heals Tour

On October 21, help the Georgetown Fire Department and Firefighters Association turn the Square pink in celebration of the Pink Heals Tour ‘09. Care enough to wear pink and come out for the tour stop on the east side of the Courthouse from 4 to 8 p.m. with live music, health information booths, and a pink fire truck with a giant ribbon. Red Poppy Festival Art Contest Seeks Submissions

The Red Poppy Planning Committee is having a call for artists for the 2010 Red Poppy Festival Artwork.  A committee of local artists will select the winning art to be used for the official 2010 Red Poppy Festival poster. 

There will be 500 posters of the selected artwork produced for sale by the Visitor Information Center.  The original artwork will be raffled and the artist will receive 50% of the raffle sales.  The artist will retain all rights to the original artwork, but will give permission to the City of Georgetown to use the art in the 2010 Red Poppy Festival promotional materials (website, ads, t-shirts, rack cards, banners, etc….).

Artwork must be original and communicate/interpret the artist’s depiction of any or all of the many facets of the Red Poppy Festival. Traditional, contemporary, impressionist, abstract, photos and digital two-dimensional works of art are welcome. The final poster will be 18″w x 24″h, therefore keep these proportions in mind when creating the artwork. Artist name, phone number and e-mail address must be clearly labeled on the back of the artwork.

All entries must be submitted to the Georgetown Convention and Visitors Bureau office at 103 W. Seventh Street by October 30, 2009. Artwork will only be accepted Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.  The artist’s name, address, phone number, and e-mail address must be clearly labeled on the back of the artwork. The artist selected will be notified by November 20, 2009.
