Hike & Bike Trails

The Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department has nearly 9 miles of hike and bike trails along the North and South San Gabriel Rivers. There is a 1.6 mile granite trail that loops around San Gabriel Park.

On the North San Gabriel River, there is a one mile lighted concrete trail that goes from San Gabriel Park to Rivery Park. On the South San Gabriel River, there is a one mile lighted concrete trail that starts at Walden and College and goes to Blue Hole Park.

The City of Georgetown’s San Gabriel River Trail was designated a National Recreation Trail by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 2006.

Red Poppy Festival Art Contest Seeks Submissions

poppyfest-300x199The Red Poppy Planning Committee is having a call for artists for the 2010 Red Poppy Festival Artwork.  A committee of local artists will select the winning art to be used for the official 2010 Red Poppy Festival poster. 

There will be 500 posters of the selected artwork produced for sale by the Visitor Information Center.  The original artwork will be raffled and the artist will receive 50% of the raffle sales.  The artist will retain all rights to the original artwork, but will give permission to the City of Georgetown to use the art in the 2010 Red Poppy Festival promotional materials (website, ads, t-shirts, rack cards, banners, etc….).

Artwork must be original and communicate/interpret the artist’s depiction of any or all of the many facets of the Red Poppy Festival. Traditional, contemporary, impressionist, abstract, photos and digital two-dimensional works of art are welcome. The final poster will be 18″w x 24″h, therefore keep these proportions in mind when creating the artwork. Artist name, phone number and e-mail address must be clearly labeled on the back of the artwork.

All entries must be submitted to the Georgetown Convention and Visitors Bureau office at 103 W. Seventh Street by October 30, 2009. Artwork will only be accepted Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.  The artist’s name, address, phone number, and e-mail address must be clearly labeled on the back of the artwork. The artist selected will be notified by November 20, 2009. You Can't Do That Dan Moody!

Showing September 4 – October 11, Fri and Sat 7:30 p.m., Sun 2 p.m.  Written by Tom Swift and Ken Anderson and directed by Tom Swift, is based on Ken Anderson’s popular book of the same title. Performed in the Williamson County Courthouse in the very courtroom in which the famous trial took place in 1923, Dan Moody, District Attorney of Williamson County, tried and convicted members of the Ku Klux Klan for the first time ever in the United States.

Tickets are available through the Palace Theatre either on-line at our Website, http://www.georgetownpalace.com, or by calling (512) 869-7469 or (512) 869-5081.  Ticket prices are $22 General Admission; $20 Seniors (55+); $12 Active Military with ID & Students (16 to 22); and $8 Students & Children (15 & younger). The courtroom, located on the second floor of the courthouse, seats about 207.  Approximately 143 seats (on wooden courtroom benches) are in the courtroom proper, with premium seating on the first 4 rows available for ticket price plus $5.  Balcony seating is on folding chairs (64 seats) and offers a $2 discount off ticket price.  Call the Palace Office for information on handicap-accessible seating.
