A fun walk and costume contest for you and your dog that benefits the Georgetown Animal Shelter-what a great way to celebrate Mardi Gras! The first annual Paws for Mardi Gras 5K walk will be held on Saturday, February 21 in San Gabriel Park. The dog walk, which is just in time for Mardi Gras the following Tuesday, starts and ends at the gazebo in San Gabriel Park. The route follows the hike and bike trail in the park.
Presented by Schlotzsky’s, Paws for Mardi Gras is a family-friendly event that begins at 10 a.m., rain or shine. The route is about 5 kilometers long, but dogs and dog owners can walk an abbreviated route if they choose.
Parade and Costume Contest
Wear your goofiest human and canine costumes for a parade and costume contest that starts at the gazebo after the 5K walk. There will be prizes for the biggest dog, smallest dog, cutest dog, best dog/person look-alike, best dog costume, and ugliest dog (in a cute way, of course).
Registration
Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. on the day of the event at the gazebo in San Gabriel Park, or you can register online any time at paws.georgetown.org. Before February 14, the cost to register online is $25 per person (two-dog limit). After Feb 14, the cost is $30 per person. Note that online registration closes on February 19. You also can register in-person at the Georgetown Animal Shelter, located at 110 W.L. Walden Drive.
Registered entrants receive a Paws for Mardi Gras T-shirt, a bandana for each dog, and Mardi Gras beads for people and dogs.
Silent Auction
A silent auction featuring more than 50 items for dogs and dog-lovers will be held at the gazebo during the entire event. Proceeds benefit the shelter.
Help Fund a Surgical Suite at the Shelter
Proceeds from Paws for Mardi Gras will be used to purchase furnishings for a new intake area and equipment for a new surgery suite at Georgetown Animal Shelter. This includes stainless steel work stations, cabinets, and tables for the intake area, as well as an autoclave, instrument packs, surgery lights, and ultrasonic cleaner for the surgery suite. The new equipment will provide shelter staff and veterinarians with an improved facility for the care of sick or injured dogs that come to the shelter. The surgery area also will be used to provide spay and neuter services for animals that come to the shelter.
Sponsors for Paws for Mardi Gras include presenting sponsor Schlotzsky’s, Graphismo, hammondovi photography, and Fur Elite Mobile Pet Salon.
