circa 1885.  An early limestone structure with carved cornices stands beneath the modern stucco facade. Early uses of the building included a local lodge meeting hall on the second floor, and a hardware/grocery store and later, the county’s oldest newspaper, the Williamson County Sun, on the first floor. Now city owned, it houses the Georgetown History and Visitor Information Center.

C.A.D Clamp Buildings

Departing from the local tradition of limestone, these buildings feature imported brick facades accented by cast iron columns attributed to F. Heireman, an Austin metalwork company. Originally each featured identical metal hood molds over the windows and crowning metal cornices. A stepped brick parapet later replaced the cornice on 709 Main. Both buildings are owned by the Williamson County Sun which has published from this located since 1934.

Chipotle Mexican Grill

“When I created Chipotle in 1993, I had a very simple idea: Offer a simple menu of great food prepared fresh each day, using many of the same cooking techniques as gourmet restaurants. Then serve the food quickly, in a cool atmosphere. It was food that I wanted, and thought others would like too. We’ve never strayed from that original idea. The critics raved and customers began lining up at my tiny burrito joint. Since then, we’ve opened a few more.”

Evans Building

circa 1902.  Hand-hewn limestone was used to exemplify the Romanesque Revival style, popular in Texas in the early 1900’s. The three-dimensional quality of the richly carved details is a dramatic contract to the utilitarian austerity of the Shaffer Building next door.

Founder's Park

Williamson County’s first six commissioners met here under a stately oak tree in May 1848 to choose a location for the county seat. George Washington Glasscock offered to donate the land he owned jointly with Thomas B. Huling as a site for the county seat. The land was bounded by the oak tree at one corner and the San Gabriel River to the north and west. The commissioners named the town Georgetown in Glasscock’s honor.

Masonic Lodge

circa 1900. With an onion dome spire soaring majestically from the corner tower, the Lodge became a major element in Georgetown’s streetscape and skyline. The Belford Lumber Company selected heavily resticated limestone with which to construct the building, which features arched door and window openings. The ground floor first housed a drugstore and, for a time, the post office before a furniture store took possession. The Masons continued to meet upstairs until 1982 when the building was sold.

Old U.S. Post Office

circa 1931. Buff-colored brick offset with terra cotta and marble trim was used to construct the Georgetown Revival-style post office, the only example of this architectural style in Georgetown. The dormer windows, roofline balustrade, classical pilasters, round keystone arched windows, and handsome broken scroll pediment over the entrance are typical Georgetown Revival details. In 1895, a frame structure on this site housed a livery stable and undertaker.

Old Williamson County Jail

circa 1888. The lawlessness of the frontier days prompted county fathers to commission this imposing fortress-like jail, the county’s fourth. This historic building no longer serves as a jail, but has become a landmark, housing offices in downtown Georgetown.

Salado

Salado is a charming old town located just 20 miles North of Georgetown on I35. In the early 1800s it was a frequent stopping point on the cool spring fed Salado Creek for Indians, Spanish, and Mexican travelers. In the mid 1800s it became an Overland Stage and Pony Express stop on the Chisholm Trail. Today the Stagecoach Inn marks the spot with a Texas historical medallion. The nearby homes and mansions have become a shopping mecca with art, antique, specialty shops and restaurants. Art fairs and plays provide frequent entertainment.

The 4th of July celebration is sponsored each year by the Georgetown Sertoma Club, a local service organization. Their website is www.georgetownsertoma.org. This year marks the 26th annual Sertoma July 4 event.

Hometown Children’s Parade in the Park

A 4th of July Hometown Children’s Parade in San Gabriel Park begins at 11:00 a.m. (gather at 10:45) at the Morrow Street low-water crossing and ends at the gazebo. The Georgetown Fire Department Pipes and Drums band will lead off the parade, which also will include Miss Georgetown Stacey Munks and her court. Kids are encouraged to decorate their wagons or bicycles for the parade, and there will be prizes for the best-decorated. (No motorized vehicles or pets.) The annual parade is sponsored by the Leadership Georgetown Alumni. For more information about the parade, please contact Ann Corso at (512) 630-3212 or cobro5@msn.com.

Entertainment, Activities, and Car Show

At the gazebo after the parade, Kara May will sing the national anthem. She is the first duchess in Miss Georgetown’s court. Brad Curlee from the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce will serve as master of ceremonies. Brad Curlee will present awards for best decorated bicycles.

More than 80 arts and crafts booths will open at 11 a.m., as well as 21 food vendors and a children’s area with games, activities, petting zoo, train rides, bounce houses, and face painting.

Entertainers at the gazebo in the afternoon and evening include Ricky Jones, acoustic duo Miller and Wing, guitarist Eric Robles, singer Alyssa Ochoa, singer Tori Carr, vocalists with Taylor Weaver Talent Works, Odd One Out Band, country and rock musician Lucian Nastase, the Georgetown Fire Department Pipes and Drum band playing traditional Scottish music, rock band The Accused, and singers Ashley Stahl, Edmarie Tomlinson, Dillon Hoerster, Shawna O’Neill, Taylor Weaver, and Heather Dillard.

At 4 p.m., an open and informal car show will be held at the south end of the park near the intersection of Stadium Drive and Morrow Street. Owners of classic cars, antique cars, and hot rods are invited to participate. There is no entry fee or prizes.

Fireworks

The fireworks display begins at approximately 9:30 p.m. Fireworks will be launched from the McMaster Athletic Fields on N. College Street. Fireworks can be viewed from San Gabriel Park, VFW Park, and other areas in Georgetown.

The Painted Churches of Texas

These churches were built by 19th century Czech and German immigrants in this new territory. Although simple looking wooden structures from the outside, practically every inch within the church is covered with bright paintings. Inscriptions are in Czech and German, the languages these people spoke. Fifteen of these churches are in the National Register of Historic places. Most are open daily, all have Sunday services.

Williamson County Courthouse

Visible for miles around, the imposing beautiful neoclassical structure is the focal point of the central business district and the fifth structure to serve as a county courthouse. Austin architect C.H. Page designed the building, projecting porticoes supported by Ionic columns, and classic pediment and balustrade detailing. The $9 million courthouse restoration was successfully completed in 2007 through a joint effort of Williamson County and the Texas Historical Commission, returning the structure to its original splendor. The pediments and balustrade were removed in 1965. The Williamson Museum conducts free guided tours of the courthouse by appointment.  For tour information:
